Professor Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, FRCOG, FRANZCOG, FAcadMEd, is a globally recognised clinician-scientist in obstetrics and gynaecology who has made foundational contributions to maternal and perinatal health, uterine physiology, and clinical education. Trained at the University of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he completed postgraduate clinical training in the United Kingdom, where he established a distinguished academic and clinical career combining patient care with research and leadership.
Professor Arulkumaran served as Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s, University of London, where he shaped clinical curricula and advanced research in labour physiology, maternal morbidity reduction, and evidence-based obstetric practice. His scientific work spans clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and translational research aimed at improving maternal and newborn outcomes globally.
Beyond his laboratory and clinical contributions, Professor Arulkumaran has held prominent international leadership roles. He served as President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), representing the global community of women’s health professionals and guiding international policy development in maternal care, reproductive rights, and quality standards. He has also held senior leadership positions within the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), including Vice-President and examiner roles that influenced postgraduate training and clinical standards across multiple countries.
His contributions have been recognised through honorary fellowships, international awards, and invited keynote lectures worldwide.
